What is coaching?
Coaching is an active dialogue that closes the gap between your current reality and your true priorities. Unlike therapy, coaching is action-oriented, a process that addresses your future, rather than your past. A good coach will ask questions that uncover your own inner truth and wisdom and provide the necessary focus and structure to help you accomplish your goals.
Of course you must be willing and committed to the process of coaching. The coaching relationship won’t necessarily make it easier for you; rather, the coach will make it possible. You still have to show up and make it happen.
There are obstacles to an authentic life, of course, some of which I would phrase in the form of questions:
- Do you have difficulty putting your self-care first?
Perhaps you are afraid of being “selfish.” To avoid that feeling you put others’ needs before your own and wind up feeling resentful about it?
- Does your schedule and use of time reflect your priorities?
If you spend your days on activities largely unrelated to your priorities, you are likely going to feel exhausted and frustrated.
- Does your life leave you feeling drained?
You are likely drained by people, places and/or things. Your life may feel like one long to-do list that never ends - a list that you are not even generating.
- Do you never have the time to attend to your spiritual well-being?
No matter how firmly you promise yourself a yoga class or time for prayer or meditation, other people or obligations always seem to take precedence.
With attention and time, all of these obstacles can be overcome! A coaching relationship can clarify what really matters to you, which can make all the difference in your life. You will know what to do!
